I live near Berkeley, California and have enjoyed challenging myself and spending long days in the mountains for as long as I can remember, whether it be trail running, climbing, hiking, skiing, biking, or occasionally just hanging out by a pristine alpine lake.
I started out hiking and backpacking with my dad, and soon got into climbing, doing numerous long backcountry routes in the Arizona and Nevada desert before moving to the bay area. I have climbed El Capitan 4 times, including a continuous 27 hour ascent of the Nose route with Jeremy Collins. I have also climbed the Regular Route on Half Dome 4 times, each in one day. I have redpointed 5.12, climbed Astroman twice and the Rostrum a handful of times, and climbed most of the major formations in Yosemite at least once. More recently I have fallen in love with trail and ultra running, and for the last 3 years I have been focused on setting a new Unsupported FKT (Fastest Known Time) on the John Muir Trail. The current FKT is just under 83 hours, set by Andrew Bentz in 2014. I enjoy long unsupported or self-supported runs in the High Sierra, and do much of my training in the hills of the East Bay and Marin.

October 18, 2014 – Coyote Ridge 50K in Marin Headlands. 32.2 Miles, 7000 feet elevation gain, 6:49, 14th place in my 2nd 50K ever – in spite of some early cramping and missing a turn which added a bonus mile or two.
August 1, 2014 – JMT Unsupported FKT attempt #2. a few days after my wedding, started at Whitney Portal and made it 83 miles to the Bishop Pass junction. With bad weather coming in and a mild ankle sprain slowing me down, I bailed at Bishop pass in a rain/snow/hail storm that tested the limits of my ultralight clothing setup.
July 28, 2014 – Married the love of my life, Amy, at Fallen Leaf Lake near Lake Tahoe. Probably my greatest accomplishment so far.
July 5-6, 2014 – South Lake to Red’s Meadow (route in Sierra Mapper) 93.5 miles, +17,471 feet / -19,640 feet, 32.6 hours moving, 37.5 hours total, average speed 2.81 mph. This is the heart of the JMT and close to half of the total the distance and elevation gain.
October 4-5, 2013 – JMT Unsupported FKT attempt #1. 48 miles and 12,000 feet elevation gain in about 20 hours. Slept at Dollar Lake and bailed at Kearsarge Pass the next day. Too cold, too slow, too late in the season, but good learning experience. I was pretty destroyed after this one. Government shutdown was in effect so it was eerily quiet on the trails. Original plan was to go in late September, but was shut down by an early winter storm with 80 mph winds at the crest and 6″ of snow in Tuolumne Meadows before I even started.
September 2013 – Mount Williamson in a day with Dan Krotz, Bryan Zeitler, and Brian Daly. About 18 hours car to car, 30+ miles with a lot of elevation gain and talus hopping. Very fun day, this is when I really started thinking I might have a shot at the JMT FKT and started talking about it giving it a try. Unfortunately no one even tried to talk me out of it.
August 2013 – Rae Lakes Loop (aka Rae in a Dae) from Road’s End 42 miles, 7000 feet elevation gain, 14:15
April 2010 – Skyline to Sea 50K 5:42, 70th place out of 191 in my first trail race, first Ultra, and first 50K. Had severe leg cramping for the last 10 miles or so – I had no idea I should have been taking electrolytes! This was also my first run over 20 miles.
